Chapter 4

The morning of the wedding came at last. Mary looked beautiful in her corn-flour blue dress. Mr Rogers looked very handsome in his morning suit and crimson cravat. They looked a very happy couple as they stood at the altar, wishing the vicar would be quicker reading the service. They made their vows very speedily and were duly pronounced husband and wife.

A reception was held where they could greet their guests. This was followed by a luncheon, after which were speeches and toasts. Mr Bennet was gracious enough to make his speech as short as possible.

“Mary is Miss Bennet no longer,” he said. “She is now Mrs Rogers. And I hope she lives up to that name.”

When he sat down, Mrs Bennet tugged his sleeve.

“What did you mean by that, Mr Bennet? What did you mean by lives up to the name of Rogers?”

“I’ll show you later, my dear. In the bed chamber. Maybe twice.”

It was strange, but Mary was on edge all day. Every time somebody touched her, perhaps touching her thigh or bottom as they brushed past her or patting her on the arm, she felt a jolt inside. It made her feverish and desperate to be alone with her new husband. She could not wait to be in the bed chamber with him. While speeches were made, food was eaten, drink was drunk, dances were danced and toasts were made, all she could feel was an almost delirious need to finally consummate her marriage.

But demands were made on her and Mr Rogers. People wished to congratulate them, to drink their health to tell them, individually and severally, how happy they were for them. Mary had been ambushed as it were by two distant aunts, both unmarried, who asked her endless questions and prattled on about very little.

Mr Bennet could see her distress and was saddened for his daughter. He joined the group and gave Mary a secret little smile.

“Good day, ladies,” he said to the maiden aunts. “Lovely wedding, wasn’t it?”

“Very agreeable, Mr Bennet,” they said in unison. It is nice to see Mary married.”

“Well, not quite,” said Mr Bennet with a little wiggle of his eyebrows.

“What do you mean?” said the aunts in unison.

“Well, Mr Rogers still has a certain unpleasant duty to perform.”

The maiden aunts blushed, cooled themselves with their fans and spoke no more.

“I have a question for you, Mary,” said Mr Bennet.

“Yes, Father?”

“If you have been recently married, then why are you and your husband not together, enjoying each other’s company. It is getting a little late you know, and it really is time you made this marriage legal.”

“You mean…?”

“Yes. I think it is time that you and Mr Rogers consummated your marriage. Your bed chamber is all prepared. I will find your husband and tell him you are waiting for him.”

She put her arms around Mr Bennet with delight.

“Thank you, Father.”

Mary hurried upstairs to the bridal suite. She went in to find it had been beautifully prepared for her wedding night. She sat on the bed and waited.
